EVENT: 2025 Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia Earthquake and Tsunami—On July 29, 2025, a magnitude 8.8 (Mw) earthquake struck offshore the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, generating a Pacific-wide tsunami. The tsunami waves caused damage in Russia, Samoa, and the U.S. (California and Hawaii). One indirect fatality resulted from the tsunami evacuations in Japan. The highest confirmed tsunami runup was 17 meters in Kamchatka, though 33 meter splash marks were also reported.
